York(shire Pudding)

Back in June, I hopped on a train north from London and headed to York. I have spent every day since daydreaming about the Yorkshire puddings I consumed while there, so I really can’t believe I forgot to post about it! Better late than never?!

Like many of the other places I visited in England over the summer, I had been to York before, but when I was 10 years old and all I remember is eating ice cream on some form of boat? Maybe? So I decided it was time to go back. I booked a cute little hotel with an alleyway entrance right in the center of town called the Judges Court and loved it! It was so easy to walk to everything I wanted to see (and the train station) from there. Close proximity was nice because it was very rainy the whole time I was there (England in the summer, am I right?) and I could make plenty of stops back at the hotel to warm up.

I basically went to York for two reasons, Yorkshire pudds, and the go to The Shambles. On the train up I did some research and found out that York also has a TRAIL OF CAT STATUES! Naturally, being the cat lady I am, I was determined to find as many of these statues as I could. There’s a map online here, but it was still tough to find them all! Soo that took up a good amount of time in York. I realize this is a bit absurd, but these guys are hard to find and I became obsessed, okay?! Gosh.

When I wasn’t looking for hidden cat statues, I did manage to make it to a few other places, like York Brewery and York Gin, highly recommend both!

Other things I did included: taking a stroll along the old city walls.

I walked along the river (might have still been looking for cats here).

I hit up Clifford’s Tower for my daily dose of being way too winded from walking up some stairs.

I went to the Shambles multiple times and ultimately went at about 7:00am in order to catch it without 32,093 people on the street. This place has major Diagon Alley vibes and I am obsessed. So. Many. Harry. Potter. Shops.

While wandering the streets near the Shambles, out of the corner of my eye I saw a little place that looked kind of like a tourist trap. It was a take-away food shop called The York Roast Co. I thought to myself “surely that’s not the best option for a Yorkshire pudding,” then I looked at the menu and saw it… this place had a YORKSHIRE PUDDING WRAP. Yes, you heard me. A roast with trimmings WRAPPED INSIDE a giant Yorkshire pudd. I think about the wrap every day of my life. They also had cups full of pork crackling as a side. So what I’m saying is, Heaven is real and its in York. Naturally I got mine to go and ate it in my hotel bed.

I did some more wandering, and some research into the best pubs for Yorkshire puddings and found The Hole in the Wall. Definitely a better setting for a good pudd and a pint, but I do sort of wish it came in wrap form, I won’t lie.

The rest of the trip was just aimless wanderings before I headed back to London. Here’s more photos from said wanderings.

Basically, you should go to York, it’s cute.

Annnddd I knew I ate ice cream on a boat there. Throwing it back to ’99 and the Winnie the Pooh sweatshirt I wore around the entire United Kingdom for two weeks straight (also featured in the Stonehenge post), and also possibly the only photo from that trip where I am NOT wearing that sweatshirt.

You’re Welcome.

Gonna go dream about Yorkshire pudding wraps now.
